2011 was a terrible year for natural disasters in Asia-Pac (Floods in Thailand and Australia, Earthquakes in Japan and NZ). How has this affected the business value of DR?

The problem with DR, according to Gerry Sillars, is that the "short term thinking" of some vendors has not allowed organisations to take advantage of the "leaps and bounds" made in bandwidth speeds, virtualisation and other areas.

"Many organisations in APJ are planning to have multiple data sets in multiple countries and often in the Cloud. It is also forcing IT staff to relinquish 'ownership' of the hardware infrastructure and concentrate on software functionality and connectivity. This has a positive impact on the staff in IT divisions, forcing them to concentrate on SLA's and innovation as opposed to hardware speeds and feeds." -- Gerry Sillars
