For years, NetApp customers have been using snapshots as a line of defense against lost or corrupt files and using a backup application to move those snaps via NDMP to tape or other endpoint repository for longer term retention. While other customers have used SnapVault or SnapMirror to replicate those snaps either locally to another FAS (by the way, I did hear one of the long time NetApp execs use the F word during one of his talks-that would be "Filer") device or remotely to a FAS device as part of their data protection strategy and managing all of this with either their own scripts or NetApp Protection Manager.
