CommVault rolls out Simpana 9 software

CommVault has announced the availability of its' Simpana 9 data management software. And while this release lacks the sizzle of Simpana 8, in that its' improvements enhance existing capabilities rather than break new ground, CommVault says it has important benefits for both partners and customers.

"Simpana 8 was revolutionary because we added software based dedupe," said Mark Conley, CommVault's senior director of North American Channels. "Simpana 9 refines and enhances, rather than being revolutionary."

The enhancements start with improvements to the dedupe.

"We have introduced source side deduplication, so it will never be stored a second time, and so it won't have to transfer the entire file across the WAN," Conley said. This translates into reducing the amount of data being transferred across corporate networks for backup or replication by up to 90 percent, while slashing backup windows by more than 30 percent.
