Introducing the PowerVault DL2300 Powered by CommVault

Thursday, November 15, 2012

Guest post by Patrick Seidensticker

Today is an exciting day for me on a couple fronts. From the Dell Storage Forum in Paris, we're officially launching the fourth-generation PowerVault DL2300 data protection appliance in partnership with Dell and it's my first product launch as a new member of the CommVault product marketing team. Prior to joining CommVault I spent 18 years in marketing hardware and software solutions aimed at governments and large enterprise users with several years specializing in Dell solutions. Dell is a great partner, and the DL2300 represents a new breed of data protection appliance – it delivers more than just backup or deduplication. The DL2300 can be used to manage physical or virtual environments and can be deployed in central data centers or remote offices to provide a wide range of data management functionality to protect, move, retain, analyze, recover and access data across any storage tier.

Let's look at the environments this is designed to help. As workflows become more flexible and disparate locations more common; remote office locations, distributed & mobile workforces are more the norm than the exception. Enterprises, especially distributed, medium-to-large organizations with remote offices, face increased challenges related to data protection and management. Multiple aspects of data management can be adversely affected including storage capacity, network bandwidth, backup windows (SLAs), and increased IT administrative costs.

We're seeing exceptional growth in the market for disk-based backup appliances, sometimes referred to as purpose-built backup appliances (PBBAs). According to IDC, the Purpose Built Backup Appliance market grew 43.4% in 2011 y/y and grew 29.8% in 2Q12 y/y. Further, IDC is forecasting almost 20% CAGR (Worldwide Quarterly Purpose-Built Backup Appliance Tracker, 2011 and 2Q12, IDC). Customers are using these appliances primarily as data movers, but also for deduplication and other data management applications.

Unified, Scalable Data Protection and Retention Right Out of the Box

The DL2300 hardware and configurations were designed to meet these challenges by unifying data protection and long-term retention in a powerful, all-in-one appliance. The solution has been optimized for CommVault Simpana software and provides new levels of scalability and performance. The DL2300 ships with CommVault Simpana software pre-configured and pre-installed, so setup is simple – customers can go from box to backup in under an hour. In addition, the DL2300 is a true unified data protection appliance specifically targeted for businesses managing data across remote locations and scaling to meet the needs of large enterprises with consolidated data centers. The DL2300 provides separate dedicated deduplication storage pools - up to two for a total of 192TB for large enterprises.

The DL2300 grows as enterprise data protection needs evolve and provides a cohesive approach to data management with functionality that includes:

Let's take a look at how the DL2300 would fit into a distributed environment and how the broad functionality within the DL2300 provides data management benefits:

Remote

In this scenario:

  • The customer has multiple remote offices
  • Sites A and B, a smaller satellite office, Site C, and a central Disaster Recovery site

A DL2300 can be deployed at each location (A & B) where it will provide local backup and recoveries, snapshot management, and deduplication. At the smaller satellite office (C), the data is deduplicated at the source and transferred to the DL2300 deployed at the central DR site. The DL2300 at the DR site uses CommVault's policy-based DASH technology to efficiently and quickly move deduplicated data, which compares data against a single deduplication database (DDB) and only sends deduplicated data across the WAN. The central DL2300 can also be used to manage long term backup and archive copies to a variety of lower cost 2nd tier storage options – including disk, tape and cloud. All of the data, whether stored in backup or archive, and located centrally and across broad geographic locations can be accessed and managed from a single location via a single console. The result is faster backups and reduced administrative costs, network and storage requirements.

From the remote office environment to the large enterprise data center, the Dell PowerVault DL2300 powered by CommVault, brings to bear all the benefits of Simpana software's Modern Data Protection in a simple, scalable, unified data protection appliance.
