Defining Unified Information Governance

Stop the presses. Today, we launched the Simpana 9 Unified Information Governance solution framework. Many might think, "what is the big deal with this?"

This is a significant milestone for CommVault as it's our first solution to be offered separately from our data management offering that is designed to focus on Information Governance. It is an integrated, bottom up approach to information management that includes key capabilities that organizations need in order to manage risk, improve efficiency and ultimately improve the value of their information.

Simpana 9 Information Governance starts with unified data acquisition. Simple copy and move functions enable the collection of information for further management. This approach leverages all the good data capture capabilities of Simpana software including archive, backup, replication, snapshots and workstation backup. These functions target a range of source data, including email systems, file systems, applications and also ingest data through a dedicated interface. From this, all data is deduplicated at the source to avoid unnecessary processing and storage across the enterprise.

Information Governance Framework

As illustrated above, the framework provides five key solution areas – from retention lifecycle management (RTM) for the granular and tiered retention of records irrespective of media and location, to enterprise search with intelligent mining, and customizable workflow for eDiscovery and Compliance with unique embedded capabilities including single-click legal hold. Solutions are also provided for identifying and managing private or sensitive data, and, of course, for records management.

Simpana 9 simply excels as a long term records retention repository with capabilities that virtualize records, as well enabling their placement to specific applications and cloud providers. In addition its intelligent search improves your business access to information, allowing you to make informed decisions more quickly. Finally, multi-role workflows help reduce the overall risk of managing legal and regulatory processes.

Simpana 9 is packed full of enhancements that benefit Information Governance:

  • A redesigned web portal interface
  • Multi-role access for different types of users with customized search and workflow
  • Information collaboration for the sharing of search queries, results, filters and record collection
  • An intuitive advanced query builder for a structured way of building more advanced searches, e.g. Early Case Assessment in eDiscovery
  • Entity modeling to find and identify patterns of information, e.g. credit card numbers
  • Support for multiple classification schemas for the tagging of content in different ways, and enabling different workflows
  • Enhanced auditing and reporting for Information Governance functions including eDiscovery and compliance workflows, legal preservations, chain of custody, search activity, data storage auditing and many more
  • Support for the XML standards for the EDRM (eDiscovery Reference Model), enabling interaction with legal tools and processes for the exchange of information
  • Integrated data analytics with key archive functions for the data analysis driven capture and retention of information
  • A new interface for the ingestion of data, with initial support for SAP Archive Connect.

Put simply, Simpana 9 defines unified information governance by delivering key benefits to help organizations keep records to comply with regulations and improve decision making through real time intelligent access to records. If you're an in house lawyer, then consider that Simpana 9 can help cut your eDiscovery costs in half, reduce risk and allow you to spend less time sifting through and reviewing evidence.
