VMworld 2012 Video: Mr. Data and the City and County of San Francisco's "Cloud-First" IT Strategy

Thursday, August 30, 2012

Guest post by Kevin Komiega

Brent Spiner Big day at VMworld. Not only did I get some schwag, meet with a bunch of CommVault customers and have a nice turkey sandwich, but I got to meet one of my geek idols. Mr. Data (thank you Brent Spiner).

The prevailing scuttlebutt is a carryover of the week's earlier news. There was a lot of talk about VMware embedding 2TB instances of Avamar in vSphere 5.1 and the potential impact on VMware's partner ecosystem, especially in the SMB space. For CommVault's take, check out Dave Raffo's article from SearchDataBackup.com and Jeff's live spot with Wikibon's Dave Vellante on SiliconAngle.tv. We don't think this is going to affect all backup vendors, though it could change the game for vendors that focus on smaller virtualized environments. CommVault customers typically protect hundreds of VMs and converge archive, search and e-discovery processes via Simpana in addition to backup.

As I mentioned in my last blog, the City and County of San Francisco (CCSF) is ahead of the curve when it comes to virtualization and the cloud. The CCSF's CTO Gina Tomlinson outlined her IT strategy as a co-presenter with CommVault COO Al Bunte. If you missed the session or weren't at VMworld, here's a recap of Al and Gina's presentation:
